What you get
What the Grade Estimate Shows You
The same four things a grader inspects, scored separately, so you can see what is holding the card back.
An estimated grade
One overall number with its label, such as 8.3 NM-MT, shown to a decimal so you can tell a strong 8 from a weak one.
PSA, CGC or Beckett scale
Switch between the three scales on the result screen to see the estimate the way each company would express it.
Scores for each area
Corners, edges and surface each get their own score, with centering measured separately, so a single weak area is easy to spot.
Measured centering
Border ratios such as 55/45 and 52/48, plus the highest grade that centering would still allow.
Flaws marked on your photos
Numbered markers on the front and back, each listed with its type, position and severity: edge whitening, corner whitening, scratches.
Is it worth grading?
The card is matched to its set and number, with the raw price, graded prices when sales data allows, and a rough range for grading fees.
How it works
Estimate a Card's Grade in 3 Steps
Photograph front and back
Open the AI Grading tab, take the card out of its sleeve or toploader and fill the frame. Sharp photos give a better estimate.
Line up the corners
Drag the four corner markers so the outline sits on the card's edges. A magnifier helps you place each one exactly, which matters for the centering measurement.
Read the estimate
Cardex checks the corners, inspects the edges, scans the surface and measures centering, then shows the estimated grade, the breakdown and the flaws it noticed. You can share the result as an image.
Why estimate a grade before you submit
Grading costs money and takes weeks, and the fee is the same whether the card comes back a 10 or a 7. For most modern cards the gap between those two grades decides whether grading made a profit or a loss. An estimate before you submit helps you sort a stack into cards worth a careful look and cards that are better sold raw.
It also shows you why a card might miss the top grade. If the estimate points to whitening on the back edges or a scratch on the holo, you can check that exact spot under a bright light instead of inspecting the whole card blind. Our condition guide explains what each kind of wear looks like.
From the estimate to the decision
A grade on its own does not tell you whether to submit. Under every result Cardex matches the card you photographed, shows its raw Near Mint price and, when there is enough sales data, compares it with graded prices. If the match is wrong you can change the card. The rest of the math, including fees, shipping and which grader to choose, is covered in Is my Pokémon card worth grading? and Raw vs graded Pokémon card prices.
What AI Grading does not do
- It is not an official grade. AI grades are estimates. Cardex is not affiliated with PSA, CGC or Beckett, and only they assign the grade on a slab.
- It works from two photos. Glare, blur, a sleeve or poor light can hide flaws or invent them. A grader handles the card under magnification; a phone camera does not.
- It does not authenticate. The estimate is about condition, not whether the card is genuine. See how to tell if a Pokémon card is fake.
Your photos stay on your device
The app states that photos are saved only on your device, are analyzed securely and are never kept on Cardex servers. Saved grades can be deleted from the result screen.
Free or Premium?
Cardex is free to download. AI Grading is part of Cardex Premium (weekly, yearly or lifetime plans, with a free trial). Searching cards, checking raw prices and browsing sealed products is free. Looking for the scanner instead? See the Pokémon card identifier and the price checker.
