Quick answer: a secret rare is a Pokémon card numbered higher than its set's printed total, like 199/165. There are 1,956 of them across 97 English sets. The first was Dark Raichu 83/82 from Team Rocket in 2000, and the newest set, 30th Celebration, has 30. The median secret rare sells for $9.56, and the most valuable right now is Celebi 145/144 from Skyridge at about $3,999.99.

Look at the collector number. On current cards it's in the bottom left corner, and on older ones it's usually bottom right. It's written as two numbers: the card's own number, then the size of the set. If the first is bigger than the second, you're holding a secret rare. Charizard ex 199/165 from Scarlet & Violet 151 is one, because the set's official count stops at 165.
That's the whole test, and it works on every era. A few things trip people up:
- Leading zeros don't change anything. 087/086 is a secret rare just like 87/86 would be.
- Letters mean a different list. Numbers like TG05/TG30, GG44/GG70, SV49/SV94 or RC25/RC32 belong to a gallery or subset with its own numbering. Those cards can be valuable, but they aren't secret rares in the usual sense.
- The symbol helps on newer cards. Since 2023, most cards above the set total carry one, two or three gold stars, two silver stars or a hollow gold star. Our guide to what the stars on a Pokémon card mean covers each one.
- A worn or tiny number is hard to read. The Pokémon card identifier in Cardex reads it from a photo, along with the set and rarity.

How secret rares changed from 2000 to today
Early sets hid a handful of secret rares each, often a single card. Neo added Shining Pokémon, Sun & Moon and Sword & Shield split them into Rainbow Rares and Secret Rares, and Scarlet & Violet turned the end of every set into a long run of illustration cards. As the count per set went up, the typical price came down.

Why new sets don't say "Secret Rare"
The 1,325 cards numbered above the set total in Scarlet & Violet and Mega Evolution sets are labeled Illustration Rare (510), Ultra Rare (356), Special Illustration Rare (232), Shiny Rare (120), Hyper Rare (74), Shiny Ultra Rare (12), Mega Hyper Rare (8), Mega Attack Rare (7), Black White Rare (4) and Futuristic Rare (2). None of them is called a Secret Rare, but by number they're exactly that, and they're where a modern set's value sits. Their median price is $7.09, against 16 cents for the cards inside the set numbering, about 44 times as much.
So if you're sorting a Scarlet & Violet or Mega Evolution pile, don't look for the word. Check the number, then the stars. The Pokémon card rarity symbols chart has every symbol by era.

Get the free appAre secret rare Pokémon cards worth anything?
Most are worth something, few are worth a lot. The median English secret rare sells for $9.56 near mint. 49% sell for $10 or more, 9.3% for $100 or more, and only 16 are above $1,000 right now. The 66 that sell for under a dollar are mostly Ultra Rares from recent sets (66 of them), the full art Trainers and less popular Pokémon ex.
Age matters more than the number. Older sets printed a handful of secret rares each, and clean copies that survived are scarce, so their medians run into the hundreds. Modern sets print dozens, and a median around $7.09 is typical there. The Pokémon on the card matters most of all. Charizard alone holds 7 of the top 25 spots above, and Celebi, Umbreon and Rayquaza show up more than once.
Condition moves the price as much as anything here. A secret rare with whitening on the edges or a crease sells well below near mint, so check it against our card condition guide before you price it. For everything else that goes into a card's value, see how much your Pokémon card is worth.
Are secret rares hard to pull?
Yes, but nobody outside The Pokémon Company knows exactly how hard. The company doesn't publish pull rates, so the odds you see online come from people opening a lot of packs and counting. What the numbers do show is that modern sets have far more cards above the total. When a set has 60 of them, pulling a secret rare is not the same as pulling the one you want.
That's why many collectors buy the single instead of chasing it in packs. Our list of the most expensive card in every set shows each set's chase card.
Check your secret rares with Cardex
Cardex is a Pokémon card price checker app for iPhone, iPad and Android. Point the camera at a card and it identifies the exact card, shows its collector number and rarity, and pulls the current market price. You can also search any card by name and save the ones you own to a collection that tracks their value.
Searching cards and checking raw prices are free. Premium adds unlimited scans, graded prices and the full list of recent eBay sales.
Where these numbers come from
A card counts as a secret rare when its printed collector number is higher than the set total printed next to it. We checked every card in 97 English expansions this way. Promo sets and gallery subsets (Trainer Gallery, Galarian Gallery, Shiny Vault) are left out because they use their own numbering, and so are Commons and Uncommons above the total, such as the basic Energy cards in the Sun & Moon base set. Prices are near-mint USD market prices from the same data the Cardex app uses, refreshed daily. The latest update is from November 4, 2026.
Secret rare questions
What is a secret rare Pokémon card?
A card whose collector number is higher than the set's printed total, such as Charizard ex 199/165 in Scarlet & Violet 151. The set count printed on every card leaves these out, which is where the name comes from. We count 1,956 English secret rares across 97 sets.
How do I know if my Pokémon card is a secret rare?
Read the collector number in the bottom corner. If the first number is bigger than the second, like 215/203, it's a secret rare. On current cards the rarity symbol next to it is usually one or more gold stars or two silver stars. If the number is worn or you aren't sure of the set, scan the card with Cardex: it shows the set, collector number, rarity and current price. The app is free to download and your first 3 scans are free.
Are secret rare Pokémon cards worth anything?
Usually more than the rest of the set, but most aren't worth a fortune. The median English secret rare sells for $9.56 near mint, 49% sell for $10 or more and 9.3% for $100 or more. Only 16 are worth $1,000 or more right now.
What is the most expensive secret rare Pokémon card?
Right now it's Celebi 145/144 from Skyridge, at about $3,999.99 near mint. Shining Charizard 107/105 from Neo Destiny is next at $3,998.99.
What was the first secret rare Pokémon card?
Dark Raichu 83/82 from Team Rocket (2000). It sells for about $143.06 near mint today. It stayed the only one until Neo Revelation in 2001.
Do new Pokémon sets still have secret rares?
Yes, more than ever. The newest set, 30th Celebration, has 30 cards numbered above its total (129/128 to 158/128). Since Scarlet & Violet they're no longer called "Secret Rare": they carry rarity names like Illustration Rare, Special Illustration Rare, Ultra Rare and Hyper Rare instead.
Which Pokémon set has the most secret rares?
Paldean Fates, with 154 cards numbered above 91. It has more secret rares than regular cards.
