- Charizard is the most common chase card. It's the most valuable card in 21 of 128 sets, from Base Set to Phantasmal Flames. Next come Lugia (7), Mewtwo (7), Gengar (6) and Rayquaza (6).
- The typical top card is worth about $422.85. That's the median across all 128 sets. In 23 sets the most valuable card is worth $1,000 or more.

- Some sets have no big chase. In Detective Pikachu, the most valuable card is worth $14.13.

Have one of these in your binder?
Scan it with Cardex. The app identifies the exact card, set and variant, then shows its current raw and graded prices and recent eBay sales, so you can price your own copy instead of the near-mint average.
Why the most valuable card isn't always the rarest
Rarity decides how often a card is pulled. Collectors decide what it's worth, and they mostly pay for three things.
- The Pokémon. A few Pokémon sell in almost any form. On this list, Charizard, Lugia, Mewtwo and Gengar top the most sets. A popular Pokémon at a lower rarity often outsells a less popular one at a higher rarity.
- The artwork. Since Scarlet & Violet, Illustration Rares and Special Illustration Rares show the Pokémon in a full scene, and collectors pay for art they like. That's how an Illustration Rare ends up as the top card in 5 modern sets.
- How many clean copies survived. Older cards were printed in smaller numbers and most were played with, not sleeved. Near-mint copies are scarce, which is why 7 of the 10 most expensive cards on this list come from sets released before 2008.
Our rarity symbols guide explains each rarity and what it's typically worth.
Before you price your own copy
- Check the exact printing. The same Pokémon can appear several times in one set. Match the collector number and set symbol; our guide to finding a card's set shows where to look.
- Check the condition. These are near-mint prices. Whitening, scratches or a crease lower the price, sometimes by a lot. See the condition guide.
- Graded is a different market. A PSA 10 copy of a chase card can sell for several times the raw price. See raw vs graded prices.
- Look at recent sales. A market price is an average. What the same card sold for this week tells you more; here's how to check recent sales.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most expensive card in 30th Celebration?
Mew (#B/RGB) is the most valuable card in 30th Celebration at about $3,857.00 in near-mint condition, followed by Mew (#R/RGB) at $3,249.64. New sets move fast in their first months, so check the current price before you buy or sell.
Which Pokémon is the most valuable card in the most sets?
Charizard. It's the most valuable card in 21 of the 128 English expansions on this list, ahead of Lugia (7), Mewtwo (7) and Gengar (6).
What is the most valuable modern Pokémon card?
Among Scarlet & Violet and Mega Evolution sets, the most expensive set-topping card right now is Mew from 30th Celebration at about $3,857.00 raw in near-mint condition. Graded PSA 10 copies sell for more.
Are these prices for graded cards?
No. Every price here is the near-mint market price of an ungraded (raw) copy of the card's main printing. Graded copies, especially PSA 10s, can sell for several times more, and played copies sell for less.
How often is this list updated?
Every day, from the same market data the Cardex app uses. When a new set comes out, it's added automatically once its cards have market prices.
For whole-set values, see the most valuable Pokémon sets, ranked by what every card adds up to, or browse all Pokémon card sets.
